Situated south of the Region Five administrative office block at Fort Wellington, West Coast Berbice, about half a mile from the public road, is a rapidly developing housing scheme known as Catherina’s Lust South. This scheme was developed by the Hopetown Multipurpose Cooperative Society Limited.
There are 20 families residing in the scheme at the moment and there are another 20 homes under construction. According to the chairman of the society, another 30 applicants, many of them remigrants, have already received approval for their house lots, and are likely to begin construction soon. The scheme is already serviced by GPL and GWI.
The access road to this developing community has for some time now been the topic of discussion with no forward movement. There is now good news for the residents. Regional Chairman, Mr. Vickchand Ramphal, on Wednesday, stated that he will contact the relevant agencies, and work toward the development of the particular access road.
Mr. Ramphal at the time was addressing the audience in attendance at a symposium held at the Hopetown Congregational Church Hall, Hopetown, West Coast Berbice, as part of the observances of National Cooperative Week in Region Five.
He said that one option is to get the project in the budget for 2017, but he is willing to explore other avenues.
There are elements within the Regional Development Council that have opposed the upgrading of the access road to Catherina’s Lust South, as well as upgrading Baker Street and Bowman Street in Bel Air Village, all of which are dirt roads in the Hopetown District.
