Playing in the veterans division, Javed Alli, Joe Mekdeci and Garfield Wilshire all advanced to the next stage after being victorious on the opening night of the Digicel Senior National Squash Championships at the Georgetown Club Inc. courts on Wednesday evening, organized by the Guyana Squash Association.
In the first game, De Groot hardly threatened Ali and failed to score a single point in the final set to eventually go down 11 – 2, 11 – 7, 11 – 0. The final result of 11 – 1, 11 – 3, 11 – 4 in favor of Joe Mekdeci over Robin Low was not a true indication of the fight that Low put up.
In the second set in which Low lost 11-3, one of the rallies between the 52-year-old Low and the 51-year-old grey haired ‘Warrior’ Mekdeci lasted over 15 shots and brought raucous applause from the small gathering.
While Low was more powerful, Mekdeci was all about tactics and his drop shots stretched Low to the limit especially as the contest progressed. In the final contest of the evening former Guyana and Southern Caribbean Champion Garfield Wiltshire and Medhi Ramdhani was the most energetic match-up of the night.
In an attempt to show their fitness levels, both players declined to leave the Court to refresh themselves at the end of the first; in end the still lanky Wilshire prevailed 11 – 4, 12 – 10, 11 – 6.
The Open draws were scheduled to commence last night with matches in the round of sixteen for the Men and quarter final matches for the Women. The standard of play and level of intensity was anticipated to increase as some of the best players in the country matched rackets.
Last night’s action was expected to involve number one seed Alex Arjoon, defending champion Nyron Joseph, Jason Ray Khalil, Kristian Jeffrey, Regan Pollard, Ben Mekdeci and Raphael De Groot in the Men’s Division while number one seed Ashley Khalil, Akeila Wiltshire, Larissa Wiltshire, Taylor Fernandes and Victoria Arjoon in the Women’s Division.
The tournament continues daily from 18:00hrs with the finals set for Sunday. (Sean Devers)
