More than three dozen young people and their parents yesterday turned out at the Egbert Benjamin Centre, in Linden, for the official launch of the Region Ten “Work Readiness” Programme. They formed the first batch of a proposed 200 youths who are expected to benefit from the programme.
The youths, who were drawn from communities across Region Ten, would be attached to several institutions such as health centres, the Linden Hospital Complex and the Mayor and Town Council.
An initiative of Regional Chairman, Renis Morian, who collaborated with the Christian Development Association, the Project has received the full support of President David Granger.
It is the first of its kind in Guyana.
At the launch, the youths were exhorted to be on their best behaviour, and were lectured at length on work ethics such as punctuality, regularity, deportment and respect for authority among other things.
The Charge was delivered by youthful Member of Parliament Jermaine Figueira.
“You have an opportunity to continue the legacy of Region Ten in being the champion of National and trendsetting experiences. My charge to you is to be disciplined and responsible in executing your duties and responsibilities to the organization by which you will be employed.
“And to give of your best in service to that organization in service to the people that you would have to deliver those services to. Always be respectful, always aspire to be a valuable asset to that organization.
“I would also like to encourage you in the experiences that you will garner from this opportunity is to aspire to discover your true gifting and talents and become an entrepreneur who will be an employer of employees,” Figueira exhorted the youths.
Deputy National Director of the NDIA, Sandra Adams, spoke to the youths of her humble beginnings in the world of work, and how through application and dedication she was recognized as employee of the month in her very first month of employ as a counter clerk at Banks DIH Qik Serv Linden Branch.
After three of those awards she was declared employee of the year, Adams noted.
Adams said that her dedication to her job, was not because she was looking for credit, but out of pure love.
“I am saying to you, who have been given this opportunity because the world of work is looking for committed people, for dedicated people. You must love what you do.
“It might not be in the field that you are looking for. But for the time that you will spend there, do it with excellence, put your best into it. You never know where you are going to end up and you are going to need a recommendation from right where you started.”
She reminded that whoever has to recommend a potential employee for a job, would only make those recommendations based on one’s performance.
“I am saying this because I want you to understand that you can start from anyplace and get to some place.”
Adams congratulated the youths on behalf of the President and exhorted them to make Region Ten Proud.
The Work readiness programme was expected to be launched in time for Guyana’s 50th anniversary.
Chairman of Region Ten, Renis Morian, had told the media a few months ago that he was on a mission to raise $48 million to fast track a programme which would involve 200 young people. The purpose, he said, was to get the youths attached to various institutions and businesses in Region Ten, which would afford them the opportunity of acquiring much needed experience in the world of work.
“Now when people apply for a job one of the first questions asked is about how much experience you have, but if you were never afforded the opportunity to be employed where is the experience going to come from?”
“So the whole idea behind the initiative is to provide that experience for young people.”
Morian said that he had written to various entities across Region Ten seeking their collaboration to make the programme a reality. Among the entities written to were Bosai, LUSCSL and Banks D.I.H. He had also penned a letter to President David Granger seeking his assistance, to which he received a positive response Morian said (Enid Joaquin)
