A mother and her male friend are among three people in custody in connection with the rape of the woman’s three-year-old daughter at an area on the Corentyne.
The incident allegedly occurred last Sunday and the child, who reportedly underwent surgery, remains hospitalized.
Police said that the mother and a male friend who had visited the home during the day were still in custody yesterday.
Two of the woman’s sons were also held, but one has since been released.
Officials from the Childcare & Protection Agency are also said to be investigating.
It was reported that the child’s two brothers, aged eight and 14, along with a male friend of the mother’s, were at home at the time of the incident. However, the child was reportedly left unattended, since the mother and the friend were allegedly imbibing. The children’s father is reportedly at sea.
According to reports, the mother, who was intoxicated, became aware that something was amiss after she heard the three-year-old crying.
Upon investigating, she allegedly saw the child bleeding from her privates. The toddler was taken to the Springlands Police Station. She was advised to take the child to hospital, where a medical examination confirmed sexual assault.
The victim was then rushed to the New Amsterdam hospital where she underwent emergency surgery. It is suspected that the incident happened outside of the house since the child reportedly had mud on her head and back.
Charges are likely to be instituted soon.
