Mackenzie High School (MHS) striker Okocha Peters 61st minute strike was all it took to sink the hearts of host Wisburg Secondary fans yesterday in the community of Linden.
Playing in the first fixture in the Region 10 Zone of this year’s Digicel Schools Football Championship, Peters took full advantage of a lapse in concentration by Wisburg goalkeeper, who was having a solid afternoon before his mistake, to hit a fumbled save into the back of an empty goal.
It was clearly heartbreak for the Wisburg side that looked good in the sodden conditions that was mixed together with heavy rain for a brief period in the second half.
The game lacked clear cut opportunities in the first period due to the conditions underfoot even though both teams tried desperately to entertain the sprinkling of fans that waited until the final period for excitement.
Wisburg were the first to come close to scoring with the opposing goalkeeper needing a brilliant save to keeep the game scoreless.
Mackenzie High also had a chance to take the lead, but excellent work by the Wisburg goalkeeper kept it even until a shot from long range had him in two minds whether to come of wait on the uncertain bounce and he chose the former, but his attempt to catch it on the full caught him just short and the balll hit the turf and while he made a valiant effort to re-gather the fumble it happened to fall into the path of a lurking Peters and he fired into an empty goal.
Wisburg were visibly disappointed and despite some attacking forays the MHS backline kept their nerve and held firm until the final whistle sounded to hand them victory.
Today, the championship continues with defending champion Christianburg / Wismar taking on Linden Foundation at the same venue.
