Guyana’s United Kingdom based female cycling queen Claire Fraser-Green was unstoppable
as she rode to convincing wins in both the Time Trials and Road Race when the Guyana Cycling Federation (GCF) 2016 National Championships pedaled off yesterday at the Mahaicony Circuit in blistering sunshine.
Fraser-Green was not tested in either event as she won the Time Trial (5.3miles) in 13 minutes 02 Seconds well ahead of the time achieved by 2nd placed Christine Matheson (15:13) of Trojan Cycle Club of Berbice and 3rd placed Ronella Samuels (15:30).
The female Time Trials was the first event of the day and like she did, Fraser-Green repeated in the final event which was the female Road Race (4 Laps -21.2 Miles) which she won in One Hour 02 Minutes 06 Seconds, leading from the start of the race as she powered away all alone.
The day’s action which is the first of three that the national championships will be contested over saw the juniors, juveniles and veterans under and over-45 battling for the title as road race champions.
This Mahaicony circuit was ideal for arriving at your national winners in the premier event on the GCF calendar and tested every rider to the hilt, many who was not up to the task dropping out along the way.
In riding to glory and bragging rights for the next year as the junior Road Race winner, Christopher Cornelius did so in grand style. The Alanis rider was up against some of the best youths in the country including the likes of Romello Crawford, Andrew Hicks and Raphael Leung.
The level of hunger displayed by Cornelius in powering to victory in One Hour 48 Minutes
04 Seconds in the 8 Laps (42.4 Miles) contest, leading from the start to the end, was commendable. Leung did not complete the race, while Crawford and Hicks did not show any desire to be competitive as they tucked in at the back of the peloton tagging each other. Nine (9) juniors faced starter’s orders.
Deeraj Garbarran and Brighton John claimed the 2nd and 3rd place for juniors and will receive silver and bronze medals. The juvenile race, which was also a 4-lap contest, ended with the title going to Zaman Khan in One Hour 01 Minute 01 Seconds; Kenyn Collins was second.
The Under-45 veterans field was reduced by four cyclists to six following the disqualification of the quartet of Lear Nunes, Ralph Williams, Everal Mundy and Steve Ramsuchit who were not at the starting line when the race was about to take off.
While the riders were visibly upset, the organisers informed that all the cyclists were informed to be at the starting line after the female time trials, since staggered starts were going to be employed for the road races that were carded for the remainder of the day.
When the dust settled early mid afternoon, Team Coco’s Junior Niles retained the gold medal and have bragging rights as the best for another 12 months, deservedly so. Niles completed the 8-lap course in One Hour 54 Minutes 22 Seconds outmaneuvering Stephen Fernandes and Paul Choo-Wee-Nam who had to settle for the silver and bronze medals.
A new Over-45 Road Race champion was crowned in the form of Raymond ‘Steely’ Newton who covered the distance One Hour 55 Minutes 42 Seconds, comfortably winning from Andrew Spencer (silver) and Shameer Baksh (bronze).
The female competitors were presented with their medals by National Cycling Coach Hassan Mohamed who also presented Fraser-Green with her Time Trials and Road Race championships jersey’s which have been donated by the Guyana Cycling Association of North America (GCANA).
Riders will have a few days off before attention is turned to the Time Trials on Saturday at the same Mahaicony Circuit for juveniles, juniors and veterans who will compete for 1 Lap each (5.3 Miles) while the seniors will be tested over 2 Laps (10.6 Miles).
