Former national middle distance track star Waveney Benn continues to remember her native
country and remains fixed on giving back.
Benn, who resides in the United Kingdom, is currently in the country of her birth and while the Guyana’s 50th Anniversary celebrations, was her focus over the period of her stay she still found the time to make a presentation of athletics clothing and other related materials to Coach Leslie Black at her residence in North Ruimveldt on Friday.
Speaking with Kaieteur Sport, Benn, who at one stage in her career ran barefoot spoke of those days and her parents’ inability to buy her running shoes, adding that that is the kind of situation she does not want any young athlete to endure right now.
“I know what is was to not have and because Ifaced that situation I do not want any other athlete to go through that kind of hardship,” she told this newspaper.
Benn, who represented Guyana at the regional level and performed with distinction said she is willing to concentrate on helping a couple of athletes pertaining to their development, but cautioned that they must exhibit the dedication and commitment necessary to reach the highest level of the sport.
“I have a lot of connections in the athletic fraternity back in London and I am willing to pull some strings to get things done should two promising athletes demonstrate the kind of discipline required to reach the top,” she stated.
Been, who has extended such benevolence whenever she returns promised to continue to do the same in the future.
She also promised to do everything possible to get a top Olympic Gold Medallist from Britain to come to Guyana for a short stint with local atheletes.
