Days after a live fragmentation grenade was hurled at the vehicle of Kaieteur News publisher, Glenn Lall, a
wanted bulletin has been issued for a 20-year-old man who police believe is the key player behind the failed attack against this newspaper.
The bulletin was issued for Shemar Wilson, called “Abdue”, who is wanted for questioning in relation to “attempting to cause explosion” which occurred two Saturdays ago at Saffon Street, Charlestown, Georgetown around 22:00 hrs.
Wilson is said to be from Lot 43 North Sophia, Georgetown and Lot 51 West La Penitence, Georgetown.
Initially, 12 persons were in custody including the 19-year-old driver of the Toyota Spacio, PSS 5252, that police found abandoned near Norton Street and Mandela Avenue, shortly after the grenade was thrown at Lall’s vehicle.
The car is impounded at the East La Penitence Police Station. The left bumper has a dent while the rear number plate was smeared with mud, as if to conceal the numbers. The front plate is missing.
The words “Dream Chasers” are engraved on the front windscreen. The vehicle reportedly belongs to a Kitty businesswoman, who had rented it to the young driver.
Up to late yesterday, the driver and another youth were the only persons who remained in police custody.
Shortly after the grenade attack, the 19-year-old driver had told ranks at the Alberttown Police Station that he was driving south along Albert Street, Alberttown, at around 22.30 hrs, when
two men on a CG motorcycle rode up to him.
He claimed that the pillion rider drew a handgun, forced him to stop, and then forced him out of the vehicle before driving away with it—it was later confirmed that it was the same vehicle from which an individual tossed the grenade at Lall’s vehicle.
On being further questioned, the driver changed his story and alleged that he had lent the vehicle to someone.
It was based on the driver’s conflicting story that the cops arrested 11 persons for questioning and now seek Shemar Wilson, who is believed to be the main man behind the attack against the newspaper.
The investigation is being spearheaded by ‘A’ Division Commander Clifton Hicken, and ranks from the Major Crimes Unit. Hicken said that he would do whatever it takes and will go as far as it takes to solve this case.
Meanwhile, explosive experts are saying that it was nothing short of a “miracle” that the
fragmentation grenade failed to explode.
Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum said that the device was a ‘live’ fragmentation grenade and that the pin had already been detached.
Fragmentation grenades shatter on impact, with the fragments shooting out with great force in different directions.
Following the attack, there have been widespread condemnations from various sections of society with the Prime Minister, Moses Nagamootoo labeling the act as an attack on the freedom of the media in Guyana.
Former President, Donald Ramotar; Social Activist, Freddie Kissoon; President of Guyana Press Association, Neil Marks; United Kingdom (UK) High Commissioner, Greg Quinn; The Private Sector Commission; Chile Ambassador, Claudio Rojas Rachel and US Ambassador, Perry Holloway, have all voiced their opinion on the dreadful act.
Kaieteur News has undoubtedly been on the forefront addressing issues and tackling corruption–head on.
When the device was tossed at the publisher’s vehicle, a security staff heard an unusual sound near the Lexus SUV, which was parked on the western side of Saffon Street.
Upon checking, the staffer spotted the grenade lying near the right front wheel. Staffers were at the time participating in a wake for KN’s Assistant Editor, Dale Andrews, who passed away earlier on the same day.
Video footage from a Kaieteur News CCTV camera shows the grey vehicle, which is heading north, slowing as it approaches Mr. Lall’s vehicle. The vehicle then accelerated after the device is thrown.
This newspaper was able to confirm that the grenade is of an extremely old manufacture, dating back to the 1940s.
The source also said that an explosion would not only have caused extensive damage to Mr. Lall’s vehicle, but also severe injury to persons in the vicinity.
