Some 15 wells across the coastland region of Guyana have run into issues. These wells were all commissioned and drilled within the last five years under the previous Guyana Water Inc. (GWI) administration headed by Shaik Baksh.
Baksh’s successor at GWI, Dr. Richard Van West-Charles during an interview with this publication stated that the technical team of GWI recently found that the casings of the 15 wells throughout the coastland were “corroding”.
“Apparently the decision was made some time ago in the previous administration to use carbon steel casings. It seems as if it is inferior and probably not enough due diligence was done on the engineering side. There probably were other imperatives that we’re not clear about, but what we do know is that these casings are corroding, so we have to re-sleeve all of those wells before we have a major disaster on our hands. That is our priority.”
Among those 15 wells, he noted that Tuschen, Vergenoegen and Hope wells were included. The well at Hope is one of the three wells that popular businessman Brian Tiwarie was contracted to drill.
Dr. Van West-Charles was pellucid in stating that the deterioration of the well casing was no fault of Tiwarie’s, as he was instructed by the former GWI administration to use the carbon steel casing. He stated that the Hope well is functioning and repairs will be made shortly.
The Chief Executive indicated that the cost for repairs to the 15 wells is close to US$1 million – a little over 190 million Guyana dollars. He emphasized that the main causes for the faulty wells were wrong engineering decisions, poor direction from the administration and the use of inferior materials.
Touching on the issue of the three wells that BK International was contracted to drill that were delayed for years, he noted that the Hope well is functioning and due to undergo repairs shortly, while the Eccles well is slated to be completed as soon as a pump that fell into the well is removed.
BK International, he intimated, has committed to doing the work needed at that specific location, he noted that the well at Eccles only needs further development as advised by engineers. Commenting on the Mon Repos location, he stated that GWI and BK are coming to an agreement with regards to that location.
Dr. Van West-Charles concluded that “with regard to the BK issues, I think we are moving forward”.

And the solution to carbon steel is? What did you say?
The engineering decision which was made under the previous administration was made by whom? The same engineering team that gwi had during the last administration is still in place today. Therefore, if poor engineering decisions were made before it will happen again.
Dr. Charles need to stop politicing and start weeding our the incompetent engineers in GWI.
‘“Apparently the decision was made some time ago in the previous administration to use carbon steel casings’
Can you then, now go on record and state that you will not penny pinch, or make mistakes?
