…as cops seek to locate assailants
The 44-year-old taxi driver who was brutally beaten Tuesday night when he was allegedly lured into Plum Park, Sophia during a failed carjacking, remains in an unconscious state at the Georgetown Public Hospital.
The cops are hoping that Gladwin Brandis regains consciousness soon so that he can relate to them what transpired on the night he was beaten and left for dead in the back seat of his Toyota Allion motor car, bearing registration number, HC 6253.
An arrest can only be made once the taxi driver identifies his attacker(s) or gives police a description of the individual(s). His wife, Nicola Brandis, yesterday said that the father of five was still unconscious and was being monitored by doctors.
Since Brandis sustained severe head injuries, he was required to undergo a CT scan to determine the extent of his injuries.
On Tuesday, carjackers were forced to abandon Brandis’ vehicle after he allegedly threw his remote starter (keys) in a trench at Plum Park, Sophia, when the men pounced on him.
It is unclear how many persons attacked the taxi driver, but reports are that the persons might have hired him to take them into Sophia.
It is believed that Brandis picked up his attackers on the road, since the last job he got from the base – Green Ice – was around 19:00 hrs on Tuesday. He was discovered in an unconscious state around 06:00 hrs on Wednesday by persons in the area. The police and the base were notified and he was taken to the hospital.
His wife said that she last spoke with him around 17:00 hrs on Tuesday, just before he left home to go out to work.
“I called him a few times and I didn’t get him, but I didn’t think anything of it, because he had to go to the cricket, so I say he was probably at the stadium. But around (22:00hrs) I called back and all his phones were off,” the woman said.
After the man failed to return home the following day, his wife said that she called and informed family members who immediately started to look for him.
“While looking, we hear that someone called into the base and say that there was a car parked in Sophia and that a man was in the back seat, so his brother went and saw it was him,” Mrs. Brandis said.
Kaieteur News was told that Brandis was rushed to the hospital by his brother and the police.
Nicola Brandis said that her husband was covered in mud when his sibling found him. Police believe that the man might have been beaten and thrown out of his vehicle by the carjackers after which they (bandits) drove off, but had to abandon the car when it abruptly stopped.
“Because the driver threw away his remote starter, they couldn’t have driven far, so they had to abandon the car. The driver probably saw his car and managed to crawl in the back seat,” a police source said.
Investigations are ongoing.
