An 18-month prison sentence was imposed on a 21-year-old man after he confessed to stealing a Toyota
Raum motor car on Tuesday.
Romario Henry of 12C Herstelling, East Bank Demerara admitted that he stole the vehicle valued $1.6M belonging to Mahendra Dhanpaul.
However, after pleading guilty to the charge, the former security guard explained that the complainant had lent him the vehicle. He explained that he had borrowed the vehicle to help with his military training. Henry claimed that he was in the process of carrying out investigations at police stations across the country.
According to Henry, Dhanpaul began running and shouting behind the car when he drove off. He claimed that he knew the owner of the car from a taxi service base in the area.
But Police Prosecutor, Neville Jeffers told the court that the complainant had parked his car on Middle Road, La Penitence and forgot the keys inside. Jeffers pointed out that Henry entered the vehicle and subsequently drove off with it.
The prosecutor said that a report was made to the Ruimveldt Police Station and a police patrol intercepted the car, which was being driven by Henry, at Hunter Street, Albouystown. He added that Henry was arrested and investigations carried out which led to him being charged.
Jeffers said that in a statement to police, the complainant made it clear that he never gave the man permission to take his car.
