…says police must move swiftly to apprehend perpetrator
The ugly beast of terrorism has raised its head once again, said Executive Member of the Working People’s Alliance, Dr. David Hinds.
The political activist made this remark in wake of a grenade-throwing incident outside of Kaieteur News on Saturday night. The explosive landed at the front wheel of the vehicle belonging to the newspaper’s publisher, Glenn Lall.
Hinds said that the news of such an act is very worrying. The University professor said that whenever a newspaper is being targeted in such a violent manner, the society must instantly raise its voice in condemnation.
Dr. Hinds noted that this is not the first such attack on Kaieteur News. On an earlier occasion, in August 2008, five press men were gunned down in the printery.
He remarked, “Everyone knows that this newspaper has been in the forefront of exposing the myriad wrongdoings in high and low places. So it is not farfetched to make a linkage between that fact and these attacks.
“One would have thought that these ugly attacks were behind us but apparently the beast has resurfaced.”
The WPA Executive Member said that the Guyana Police Force must also move as swiftly as possible to apprehend the perpetrator. Guyana cannot afford another reign of terror, he added.
Dr. Hinds said that the act was also a most cruel one since it comes at a time when the Kaieteur News family is mourning the death of one of its dearest colleagues, Assistant Editor, Dale Andrews.
The political activist said that the police must also move very quickly to provide the necessary protection for the staff of the newspaper.
Lall was disappointed with the way the police handled the matter on Saturday.
He said, “The ‘A’ Division Commander, Clifton Hicken, came here and didn’t see it fit to come over to me and offer some support. He stood across the road all the time, ignoring the impact of the grenade on the management and staff.
“His behavior did not speak well for the leadership of the Guyana Police Force.”
Lall said that in the USA, basic police norms would dictate that when a senior police officer goes to a crime scene, he would go to the aggrieved person or persons and after introducing himself, inquire into what took place.
“Several officers, police and army there, were surprised about Hicken’s action,” asserted Lall.
The KN Publisher said that it was only until the end of the entire ordeal that Hicken saw it fit to inform him that he was going to leave a senior rank at the premises.
The KN Publisher said, “A change in such a lax culture and behaviour by a senior police officer needs to be criticized for us to have change.”

Something about this guy Hickens does not sit well in my spirit; especially since the murders of the three Linden martyrs, his command of police officers when PNC protestors were shot while walking through the streetsof Georgetown, and his unusually quick appearance on the scene after Crumg-Ewing was murdered. Now he is behaving oddly here. Is he a PPP plant or puppet?
Watch this guy with both eyes wide open! I don’t like him!
