A pledge by Commander of the Police B Division Assistant Commissioner Ian Amsterdam to rid the Corentyne district of criminal elements appears to be bearing fruit with a number of recent high-profile arrests.
The pledge was made at a meeting held at the St Francis Community Developers (SFCD) between residents, the police hierarchy, the business community and other influential persons.
Residents in turn pledged to unite and join with the police in their fight against those who are trying to making their lives uncomfortable.
Commander Amsterdam had told those gathered that the police had never lost a battle against criminals. He told the gathering that some of the reasons why criminals thrive in certain areas were because the residents never speak out against wrong doings and criminal elements in the areas.
When things got out of hand the criminals turn around and terrorize the said residents of those areas.
He had urged the residents to trust the police and if some police officers are not performing up to scratch they should report them.
Amsterdam called on the community to form themselves into groups and work with the police. He urged them to form youth groups, community police groups and join in the new initiative called “Team Policing”. Residents mentioned the slow response of the police, lackadaisical attitude of some police officers and a request was made for the removal of all the police at the Rose Hall Town Outpost.
A request was made for a list of the needs of the police in the area, while pledges were made to assist with flyers, transportation and flash lights.
The Police at the Rose Hall Town Outpost have since received a new vehicle while the B Division Commander received over 1000 stickers with numbers of police stations and emergency numbers which are to be placed on vehicles and other strategic locations.
The main purpose of the stickers was to allow the phone numbers of the police to be easily accessible.
