Plans are in the pipeline to construct a viewing gallery at the majestic Kaieteur Falls where visitors can go and experience an overhead view of the falls.
This was announced by the Minister of Tourism, Cathy Hughes during a recent interview.
Hughes said that initially, there were plans to construct rails around the edge of the falls in an effort to prevent persons from jumping over, but this has been put on hold while the authorities consider constructing the viewing gallery.
“One of the things we are looking at is actually constructing an observation viewing gallery which would be tastefully designed in keeping with the environment,” the Minister said.
She explained that the gallery will resemble those installed at various national parks around the world, including one at the Grand Canyon in the United States.
A viewing gallery also referred to as an observation deck or observation platform is an elevated sightseeing platform usually situated upon a tall structure. This will be constructed to beautify the area in proximity to the falls.
The site has gained a series of bad publicity after three young women jumped off the single drop falls.
In 2009, 23-year-old Aliya Bulkan of New Providence, East Bank Demerara jumped into the falls during a tour with a friend. Her body was recovered a few days later.
On September 01, last, Gyaneshwarie Laleta Sivanand of La Bonne Intention, East Coast Demerara took a deadly plunge into the falls. Her decomposed body was recovered a few days later.
Also taking a deadly jump was 21-year-old Roshinee Pagwah of Reliance, East Canje, Berbice. Pagwah left her home on November 21, last to visit the falls. She was the only domestic tourist on the flight.
Persons, who were a part of the group, reported to the police that they saw the woman running towards the fall and then leaping off. Her body was recovered a few days later.
