A police traffic rank operating in Berbice is coming in for high praise after he single-handedly busted a drug operation which netted over seven kilograms of marijuana.
The rank who is stationed at Central Police Station, New Amsterdam, made the bust on Wednesday on the Washington Public Road, West Coast of Berbice.
Reports reaching this newspaper stated that the rank was coming from Georgetown in a patrol car when he received information about some men in a car who were transporting drugs. He spotted the car at the village of Washington and observed that two men were standing near it.
Kaieteur News understands that as the rank exited the police vehicle, the men saw him and one of them ran away. The other man, who is reportedly the owner of the car, threw away the keys in an attempt to avoid the police searching the vehicle. But the policeman was not put off by this, since he was certain that he was onto something. He managed to get the car open and eventually found the drugs in the back seat, neatly sealed with plastic wrap.
The marijuana was taken to the nearby Weldaad Police Station where it was weighed in the man’s presence and amounted to 7,200 grams. The man was told of the offence and was promptly taken into custody.
Meanwhile, the traffic rank had signaled for back-up, which subsequently arrived, and pursued the other suspect who had run away. He was eventually captured in the West Berbice backlands, and is now in police custody.
