Candidate Master, Anthony Drayton, turned in his usual top performance to capture the inaugural Mike’s Pharmacy Chess championship when the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) staged that tournament to coincide with Guyana’s 50th Independence anniversary at the National Resource Centre, Woolford Avenue, over the past weekend.
Played under the Swiss System, the seven-round tournament saw Drayton accumulating 6 ½ points as against 6 points accrued by national senior champion, Wendell Meusa. The two had played earlier in the tournament and the game ended in a stalemate.
Meusa, who has recently attained Candidate Master Status after participating in the FIDE Sub-Zonal tournament in Barbados, had to settle for the runner-up position on 6 points after his game against Calvin Giddings also ended in a draw.
Candidate Master Ronuel Greenidge closed off the podium positions with five points while Candidate Master Maria Thomas, Davion Mars, Ryan Goliah and Ghansham Allijohn all finished with four points to occupy joint fourth position.
Giddings scored 3 ½ points while by Roberto Neto, Yolander Persaud and Jessica Callender all amassed three points each. Kristoff Persaud scored 2 points while Jayden Taylor ended in the cellar position on one point. The various winners were all presented with trophies and medals, compliments of Mike’s Pharmacy.
Representative of the sponsor, Colin Europe, said the business establishment was pleased to support the GCF and its programme. He also noted that the game provides a great opportunity for young people to be meaningfully engaged.
Proprietor of Mike’s Pharmacy, Lakeram Singh, came in for high praise from President of the federation, Irshad Mohamed, for his willingness to sponsor the tournament at short notice. Mohamed said that at a time when sponsorship is extremely difficult to attain, Mike’s Pharmacy has demonstrated its commitment to sport, and the federation and players are more than happy to welcome the entity as part of the chess family.
