The body of Tabitha Small was early yesterday morning fished out of the Demerara River.
The woman’s body was retrieved from the river around 06:30 hrs, in the vicinity of the Wismar Market. It was subsequently taken to the Wismar mortuary.
Shock waves had rippled through the mining Town after news spread of a young woman who had jumped off the Mackenzie/Wismar Bridge to her death, in the murky Demerara River.
The woman turned out to be Small.
Several persons reportedly witnessed the incident.
Twenty-four-year-old Small, of South Amelia’s Ward, was reportedly diagnosed with tuberculosis about two years ago.
On Monday last, Small had gone to the Linden Hospital Complex for treatment for her condition, according to reports. She had reportedly suffered a fainting spell while there, and was subsequently admitted to the institution.
However sources revealed that Small took her own discharge early Tuesday morning, and proceeded to the Mackenzie/Wismar Bridge. According to one eyewitness, she was barefooted at the time.
The woman subsequently climbed onto the rails of the bridge and jumped overboard, as she neared the Wismar end of the bridge, eyewitnesses reported.
No one was close enough to the woman, to save her.
