– Claudrice McKoy wins women’s race
Winston Messinger continued his imperious form after crushing the field in the Professional Key Shop ‘Golden Mile’ which was run yesterday in the Capital Georgetown.
The lanky Messinger, who has now become the face of distance running in the country cruised to victory in a time of 4 minutes 33 seconds to relegate Cleveland Thomas, who came home 4 seconds later, into second place, while Quancy Morian and Devoi Barrington ended third and fourth respectively.
In the Women’s Open, Claudrice McKoy was also in dominant form winning in a time of 5 minutes, 39 seconds to beat into second place Kezra Murray, while Ashanti Scott and Tabita Bowman closed out the top four in that order.
The race which started outside of the 704 Sports Bar on Lamaha and Albert Streets saw a group of six runners separate themselves from the pack immediately and they proceeded west along Lamaha Street, before turning south into Carmichael Street with four of the runners were left in Messinger and Thomas’ wake, leaving the two to battle to the finish line.
Messinger, who was always lurking in the shadows of distance king Cleveland Forde and Thomas for sometime, planned his attack perfectly following a furious pace that the two initiated and just before they approached Middle Street some 200 metres from the finish line he produced a sudden burst of speed that Thomas could not respond to and had to settle for second place.
It was another mesmerising performance by the new face of distance running that has obviously evoked the conversation of whether Forde is suddenly afraid to match strides with the latest sensation.
In the Open category (male) the winner took away $50,000, runner-up $30,000, 3rd and 4th placed finishers $15,000 and $10,000 respectively.
In the female version, the winner received $30,000, runner-up $20,000 and 3rd and 4th placed finishers $15,000 and $10,000 respectively.
All the winners collected trophies and medals.
