-Three changes made to Guyana squad
Guyana’s ‘Green Machine’ Captain Richard Staglon speaking at a press conference at Olympic House yesterday, attempted to dissolve any anxiety that fans may be experiencing in relation to the team’s preparedness for
tomorrow’s clash against Jamaica in the South Zone Division of the Rugby Americas North (RAN) 15s’ Championship, at the National Park Playfield.
The vastly experienced Staglon, who has been a member of the national team for a number of years, was responding to a question posed by the media about the squad’s fitness in light of the inclement weather which according to him has negatively impacted their preparations ahead of tomorrow showdown against the Jamaicans.
“Our preparations have been hampered somewhat by the rainy weather, but we are not using that as an excuse for not being prepared. The guys have been coming out and we’ve been able to have the use of the Camptown ground and the Beach facility behind the Marriott Hotel,” Staglon told the media.
Staglon said the team is about 95% fit and he expects the players to beat the Jamaicans despite not having the best of preparations.
Manager of the Jamaica squad Tezra Sangster in his comments said that the game against Guyana is no different to any other and they are confident of doing well.
He noted that Guyana is a very good team and while they will be facing them at home, they are not fazed by such a task, adding that it’s like going up against any other team on their home turf.
The Jamaican Captain Hubert Thomas echoed similar sentiments to that of the Manager and even conceded that the Guyana team is loaded with talent, but also expressed confidence of winning.
“We’ve seen a few clips of them, we know they are very good, but I feel that we have a good team as well.”
President of the Union Peter Green, who was in attendance, welcomed the Jamaicans to Guyana, but cautioned them that they will be in for a rough time on the field.
Green also took the time to appeal to members of the public to desist from using the lone rugby field around this time since it is greatly affecting their preparations of the facility to host an international fixture.
Meanwhile, the Guyana squad has made three changes to the one that faced Barbados last month with Claudius Butts, Seon Kitt and Toby David replacing Jacques Archibald, Ryan Dey and Keifer Lopez.
