-every region will be visited
It’s here again. The highly anticipated Digicel Nationwide Schools Football Tournament was launched, during a simple ceremony that was conducted, at the Covent Garden Secondary School yesterday.
In attendance at the occasion were CEO Kevin Kelly, Head of Marketing Jacqueline James, Communications Manager Vidya Bijlall-Sanichara, Events and Sponsorship Manager Louanna Abrams, Sales and Marketing Manager Nalini Vieira, Head of Customer Care Sherwyn Osborne, Tournament Co-ordinator Lavern Fraser, Director of Sport Christopher Jones, Guyana Football Federation (GFF) President Wayne Forde, schools representatives among others.
James whose brainchild it was to conceptualise the event back in 2011 in her opening remarks told the gathering that the aim this year is to get as much as 180 schools registered which would mark a 9% increase in participation.
She said that the tournament which is set to commence on June 10 with games scheduled for most of the Ten Regions will end on July 31 with the finals, at the National Stadium.
James disclosed that the tournament which is designed for players under the age of 18 years is also intended to help develop their skills, while providing gateways for them to see many communities outside of their respective neighborhoods.
In giving a synopsis of the tournament, the Marketing executive informed that twelve regional champions will be crowned, while Region 4 has been divided into three sections thereby allowing teams a better opportunity to advance.
Kelly in his presentation spoke of the passion and enthusiasm that is generated within the Company when this time comes around and called on members of the respective communities that matches will be played to come out and support their teams.
He said there must be an awakening of support with the communities both in terms of support for the schools and also at the level of preparations since he believes that because the logistical preparations is so enormous it should not be left to Digicel alone to make the event a success.
According to him, the benefits of such an undertaking is huge to all parties involved so there must be a collective effort made to reap the desired results.
“We need everyone on board to make it a success, we are going to every region and community,” Kelly noted.
He showered praise on all those who worked tirelessly over the years to make the tournament what it is today.
Jones said it was indeed a privilege for the Government to be part of the tournament, adding that it is widely accepted as the most anticipated schools football event annually. He reckoned that the tournament is perhaps the only chance many of the young participants have to see other regions.
He urged the GFF to seize the opportunity being presented to them by Digicel to spot talent, while also calling on other corporate entities to follow in the footsteps of the Company.
He closed by offering the Government’s continued assistance through the Ministry of Education towards the tournament.
Forde in his remarks applauded the effort of Digicel over the past six years, adding that despite the tumultuous times football faced during the same period, they never allowed it to distract them from their programme.
He said currently Guyana’s national team comprise members from 3-4 clubs, but now with Digicel’s involvement in the sport there is every possibility that more players from different regions can now be spotted and have a chance to enter the national grid.
He expressed pleasure with the Ministry of Education being on board and promised unmitigated assistance to Digicel in the future.
Meanwhile, the winning team will take away $1million, runner-up $700,000, 3rd place $400,000 and 4th place $350,000, all going towards a project of the respective schools choice.
Additionally, every regional champion will be awarded $100,000.
