An enthralling end to the West Indies Fullbore Shooting Council Individual Championships at the Crabbs Fullbore Range in Antigua and Barbuda is anticipated today with defending champion, Guyanese Lennox Braithwaite trailing countryman Mahendra Persaud on Vs following a testing second day of competition yesterday.
Persaud, who ended in 4th place after the first day on Tuesday which saw only two ranges being contested, stormed back on day two, yesterday when the third range from day one (600 yards) was the first to be done before the three other ranges which were originally set for day two, came off.
It was a testing day of shooting with the winds coming on from the sea consistently heavy throughout the day which would have called upon the experience of the main shooters to overcome same.
That is exactly what took place as the seasoned campaigners along with some good performances from a few O Class shooters highlighted the day’s action.
Persaud ended as the top shot on day 2 having dropped just 3 shots at the three ranges as well as achieving a possible at the 500 (2n10) yards range with a score of 35.3; this range was won by Lennox Braithwaite (35.5), four shooters getting the possible.
Persaud also won the 300 (2n15) yards range with a score of 74.10 as no shooter gained a possible, while Norris Gomez was the top shot at the final 600 (2n7) yards for the day with a score of 49.4, dropping a single shot.
Despite some minor glitches experienced during the day, the shooters have been enjoying a good time so far as many O-Class shooters, the tier below the X-Class which is for the big boys and girls, have been holding their own.
Braithwaite and Jamaica’s David Rickman both shot possibles at the first range for the day, 600 yards range – brought forward from day 1 – of 35.3 and 35.1 respectively; the former’s performance propelled him past Norris Gomez who had taken the lead after the first two ranges at 300 and 500 yards.
The 600 yards range should have been shot as the final range on day one but owing to some technical glitches and time constraints, it was decided to do it as the first range on day 2, yesterday.
When the scores were tallied, defending champion Braithwaite had overtaken the leader after two ranges, T&T’s Norris Gomez, leading by a single point, 158.10 to 157.11. Jamaica’s Jose Nunez was third (155.15) one V ahead of Guyana’s Fullbore Captain Mahendra Persaud, both with the same points.
Guyana’s Vice-Captain Dylan Fields was the next Guyanese in 9th place after day one with a score of 152.12 with Ransford Goodluck (151.9), Leo Romalho (151.8) and Sherwin Felicien (151.8) at 11th, 12th and 13th.
Scores for the other competing members of the Guyana’s team after the first day scores were USA based John Fraser (150.9 – 16th), Peter Persaud (147.7 – 22nd), ACP Paul Slowe (143.4 – 32nd), Ryan Sampson (142.7 – 33rd), Lt. Col. Terrance Stuart (140.6 – 37th).
Shooting possibles on the opening day were Braithwaite at the 500 and 600 ranges; Gomez at 300 and 500; Nunez (300), Rickman (600) and Louis King of Barbados at 600 yards.
Today’s final day which promises to be filled with shots of excitement will see the 53 competitors from the host nation, Barbados, Canada, Guyana, Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago aiming to outdo each other by hitting the target accurately knowing that the title of Individual Champions in the West Indies is at stake along with bragging rights for the next year.
Competition will be at the 300 (2n7), 500 (2n10) and the final range, 600 which will see 2 sighting shots and 15 rounds to count. When the final shot is fired, then the competent statisticians will then tally up before declaring the winner.
