Police from all the various subdivisions and sections of the Berbice B division joined with members of the community as they came out in their numbers to participate in a fitness walk to mark the continuing 50th
Independence Anniversary programme.
The 5Km walk began at the junction of the Berbice River Bridge at Palmarya, East Coast Berbice and wended its way along the main Corentyne thoroughfare over the Canje Bridge into New Amsterdam and ended at the B Division Police Headquarters at Forbes Burnham Drive, Couburg and Strand New Amsterdam.
Lead by B Divisional Commander, Assistant Commissioner Ian Amsterdam, Senior Superintendent Errol Watts and included Officer in Charge of subdivisions No.1 (New Amsterdam / Canje / East Bank and East Coast Berbice), Deputy Superintendent Guy Nurse; B Division Traffic Officer, Assistant Superintendent Timothy Williams, B Division Community Relations Officer, Assistant Superintendent Keith Williams other senior officers from all the subdivision including No.2 (Lower and Upper Corentyne and Corentyne River and No,3 (West Berbice) along with Traffic department, CID and Special Constabulary, neighbourhood police and community policing groups and some members of the public participated in the event.
At the station the ranks were carried through their (exercise) calisthenics paces by Assistant Commissioner Amsterdam and other senior ranks.
Apart from the activity being a part of the 50th Independence Anniversary observance it was also held to keep ranks fit and to incorporate members of the public in the police activities.
Other activities are on the programme, including a thanksgiving and church service, the police participation in the Jubilee day of sports and involvement in other community activities. A number of indoor and outdoor sporting activities are also planned to mark the celebrations. (Samuel Whyte)
