Defending champion Amelia’s Ward Russians set up a quarter-final date with High Rollers after squeezing past Main Street Panthers 1-0 in Round of 16 action in the Linden segment of the Guinness ‘Greatest of the Steets’ Futsal Competition on Tuesday night, at the Mackenzie Market Tarmac.
Their place in the last eight was secured by Shaun Daniels, whose 18th minute dagger was what separated the two teams.
High Rollers booked their place following a Jamal Allen strike after three minutes in their encounter against Eagles.
The other matchups will see Hard Knocks go up against Classic 6; Silver Bullets take on Wisroc and Team 25 tackle Magic Stars.
Played before another large turnout that included overseas visitors here for the Linden Town Week celebrations, the reigning champion was pushed to the brink by the Panthers, before Daniels lashed home to send their supporters into frenzy.
Team 25 with former national mid-fielder Collie Hercules pulling the strings in centre-field was also made to fight in their clash against Constab, before Quacey Johnson opener in the 17th minute from a fierce right-footer left the door slightly ajar and Kenard Tyrell pierced it one minute later to seal the win.
Magic Stars survived a close penalty shootout against Retrieve Unknowns with the contest finishing 1-0 after regulation time ended 0-0.
In other results, Classic-6 edged Half Mile/One Mile by a 2-1 margin. Colwyn Draws registered a brace in the fifth and 13th minutes, while Orlando Adams netted in the 20th minute for the loser.
Last year’s beaten finalist Wisroc beat Future Stars 2-0 on penalty kicks after regulation time ended 0-0, while Hard-knocks trounced Royal Youths 4-0.
Roy Bobsemple netted after 18 seconds and in the 11th minute, while Trenton Lashley and Randy Small added solitary strikes in the 13th and 16th minute respectively.
Silver Bullets then dispatched FC Deportes by a similar margin with Clifton Halley’s 30 seconds strike opening the floodgates, before Rawle Gittens, Deshawn Freeman and Damian Williams contributed in the third, 10th and 19th minutes of play.
The winning team will receive $400,000 and the Championship trophy, while the second, third and fourth placed finishers take home $150,000, $75,000 and $50,000 respectively.
