The highly anticipated Annual Digicel Nationwide Schools Football Competition will be launched today, at the Covent Garden Secondary School on the East Bank Demerara, starting at 10:00 hrs.
The event which is run all across the ten regions of Guyana is a widely popular tournament that has made a significant impact in local football development, aiding in detecting talent, exposing participants to the different culture and customs of the six races, while participants also benefit from witnessing the diverse geographical locales that make up this beautiful country.
It is anticipated that several Top Brass of the Company will be in attendance along with representatives of the participating schools and Organising Committee.
The defending champion is Christianburg / Wismar Secondary.
Meanwhile, Digicel has released rules that will govern this year’s tournament and they are seen below:
1. All participating students must be born on or after 31st of July, 1998.
2. All participating students must provide a photo copy of their National I.D card or Birth Certificate which must be affixed to the completed and signed registration form.
3. Students must be bona-fide pupils of the school they represent in the competition. That is, they must be currently attending the school that they represent.
4. Students must have at least 50% attendance rate in current school term at the time of registration, verified by the Principal of the school.
5. School(s) found violating rules 1 and or 2 will be disqualified from the competition and shall debarred from the competition for two years, and will also be reported to the Ministry of Education.
6. No student can represent more than 1 school in the competition.
7. Students who are registered with any institution e.g. lesson groups apart from bona-fide schools can participate in the competition on behalf of the institution once they receive an authentic written permission from their school, which must be attached to the registration form.
8. Competition will be played on a knock-out basis.
9. All games including the semi-finals and final matches will be played for a period of 90 minutes, divided into two (2) 45 minutes halves with a halftime interval of 15 minutes.
10. In the event that a game cannot be played for the full 90 minutes, due to unforeseen circumstances, such as “a water logged outfield” a collective decision will be made by the officials (referees and Digicel representatives) and communicated to the teams captains and managers of the reason/s for the adjusted regulation time for the game. Games must be played for a minimum of 70 minutes under these circumstances.
11. If at the end of regulation time there is no winner, penalty kicks shall be taken with each team being allowed five (5) kicks. If there is still no winner at the end of the penalty shoot-out, the sudden death penalty kicks become applicable.
12. Teams can submit up to a maximum of 24 players to allow for any eventualities and the final 18 players to represent a squad must be selected no less than 15 minutes before game time.
13. Any team having less than seven (7) players at the initial kick off shall forfeit the match.
14. Each team is entitled to five (5) substitutions as per FIFA rules.
15. Player(s) upon receiving a red card or two (2) yellow cards during any one game prior to the semi finals will be automatically suspended from the next game. If any red card offence warrants further sanctioning, the competition organizers will decide what action shall be taken against that player(s).
16. A player who receives two yellow cards in the semi-final will not be allowed to play the third place or final game. Any player receiving a straight red in the semi-final will not play in the third place or final match.
17. Teams cannot protest a game by not taking to the field. They must play, but lodge a verbal and/or written protest with the officials of the game before taking the field. The game will be deemed played under protest by the officials.
18. The team that causes the game to be abandoned for any reason will forfeit the game and points given to the opposing team.
19. The team that causes the game to be abandoned will also be banned from participating for the next year.
20. All team protests must be made within 24 hours on completion of match. This protest must be signed by the manager of the team and or the Headmaster/mistress and submitted to the Match Coordinator.
21. All teams must arrive at playing venue at least 30 minutes before initial kick-off time.
22. Teams must carry playing gear or provided uniforms from 2015 to match venue at all times.
23. All FIFA, CONCACAF, and GFF playing rules will apply for all games played.
