Boxing promoter and businessman Seon Bristol is teaming up with the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) to bring off a card for Guyana’s 50th Independence Anniversary. In a brief telephone interview yesterday Bristol said that he was shocked to know that boxing was not being represented on the list of activities for Guyana’s Golden Jubilee and plans to rectify that.
“I think it would be unfair and a sporting injustice not to have boxing during these celebrations. Boxing has done more than any other sport for Guyana and we need to keep that flame burning. I was happy to know that when I called, my brother Steve Ninvalle was willing and ready to jump on the ball,” Bristol said from the USA.
The card is scheduled for May 28 and will feature only amateur bouts. GBA president Steve Ninvalle declared that he has designated Technical Director Terrence Poole and Chairman of the Coaches Commission Sebert Blake to come up with boxers for the card.
“It’s a short amount of time but it would be done and creates another avenue for valuable competition for our young fighters,” Ninvalle said. The GBA boss explained that focus would be placed on fights with our schoolboys, junior and youth boxers.
Bristol, a former amateur boxer and manager, has been a source of support for the sport for some time. In the past he has presented equipment, assisted in overseas travel, donated trophies and helped with encampment of boxers.
Bristol, the nephew of former Commonwealth junior middleweight champion Kenny Bristol, disclosed that he will be looking to his uncle and former Commonwealth lightweight champion Lennox Blackmore to make the one-night card a success.
Both former champions recently returned home. “I understand that it’s a short amount of time and we need all hands on deck. This is not about making money but rather giving back to the sport and allowing those from the Diaspora, back home for the Anniversary, to have a look at our young and upcoming fighters. My belief is that it is a fitting thing to do,” Bristol added.
The upcoming card follows the Caribbean’s first International Schoolboys and Junior tournament hosted here last month by the GBA.
