In what was billed as part of Region One (Barima Waini) Guyana’s 50th Independence Anniversary celebration, Guyana Cricket Board select XI overcame Region One XI by eight wickets in a T20 fixture played at the
Mabaruma Settlement recreation ground on Thursday.
The presence of international stars such as Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Tremayne Smartt, victorious West Indies U-19 World Cup captain Shimron Hetmyer, Keemo Paul and Tevin Imlach created much hype in the community as residents came out in their numbers to witness them in action.
Prior to the game, the visiting contingent which included Director of Sport (DOS) Christopher Jones were given a tour around the area and much to their delight elderly residents and school children gathered on the road way to greet their heroes.
The Region One RDC hosted a colourful opening ceremony to get the day’s event underway. Following prayers and the recitation of the National Anthem, Regional Vice Chairperson Sarah Browne addressed the thousands present. She expressed gratitude to the visitors and spoke of the importance of such an event. In his remarks DOS Jones lauded the organising committee and pledged his assistance for the development of sports there. Veteran test batsman Chanderpaul then thanked the
organisers, adding that he is impressed with the interest shown the by residents for the game. Chanderpaul, who scored 11,867 runs in 164 tests, stated that such venture is important since it will help to promote the game in the Region. He urged the youths to take their education seriously and touched on the importance of discipline.
Students of North West Secondary, Mabaruma and Hosororo Primary schools then performed several cultural items before the toss.
The fans were then given on field entertainment and cheered every moment of it. The home team were inserted and lost Orrison Sealy who was bowled by Paul for one in the second over. Amar Sahadeo and Devon Joseph offered some resistance before Joseph was removed by Sherfene Rutherford for 11, while Chanderpaul had Sahadeo caught and bowled for 17. Despite Chanderpaul marshalling his troops well, Raymond Harry and Bruce Choung provided some entertainment. Harry smashed two fours and a similar number of sixes before he was taken off Smartt for 33, while Choung hit an unbeaten 24 with two fours and two sixes as Region One XI finished on 119-4.
Paul, Rutherford, Smartt and Chanderpaul had one wicket each.
Medium pacer Adrian Hernandez removed Kevon Boodie (08) while Sealy had Imlach (04) caught at mid-off to reduce to visitors to 27-2. Chanderpaul received a standing ovation as he walked to the middle and every run that came off his bat was greeted with loud cheers.
The left-handed Chanderpaul and Hetmyer took their team within sight of victory. Hetmyer played aggressively, smashing three fours and four sixes before he retired hurt on 47 to give home town boy Robin Bacchus a chance at the crease. Chanderpaul hit three fours in scoring an unbeaten 27, while Bacchus was unbeaten on 15 with two fours as the GCB XI ended on 121-2 in 11 overs.
Every member of the visiting team was then presented with tokens. The event was made possible through the Ministry of Education Department of Sport, National Sports Commission, Guyana Cricket Board, George Melville and family (Global Technology) and Misty Campbell.
