Guyanese United States-based sprint ace, Brenessa Thompson yesterday continued her historic
2016 Season when she erased former Olympian, Aliann Pompey’s 200m record from 2004 at the South Eastern Conference (SEC) Championships.
From reports reaching Kaieteur Sport, Thompson clocked 23.19 seconds at the Championships yesterday to erase Pompey’s record of 23.33 seconds, set in 2004. Thompson will represent Guyana at the Olympic Games in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil in August.
Thompson had already qualified for the Olympic Games with an impressive 11.31 seconds in the 100m at the Michael Johnson Invitational weeks ago. Her time was under the 11.32 seconds Olympic qualifying mark.
The time had also set a new stadium record for the Texas-based Stadium as well as a new personal record for the Texas A & M scholarship student-athlete. In addition, Thompson’s time was among the best from a Guyanese woman.
Jennifer Innis hold Guyana’s national 100m record with 11.26 seconds. Locally-based, Winston George and triple jumper, Troy Doris is the other Olympic qualifiers in the Men’s 400m race and triple jump respectively.
