Football fans on the East Coast of Demerara are expected to troop to the Victoria Ground for the start of
the Mayor’s Cup Football tournament today from 6:00pm. Following two postponements due to the recent weather, Coordinator Lennox Arthur has indicated that all is set for the event’s opening salvo, with action set for today and tomorrow at Victoria.
Today the Linden teams will march to the East Coast venue looking to make a successful start to their Mayor’s Cup campaign, however, the East Coast boys are planning a fiery reception for them.
Ann’s Grove challenge Eagles United in the first game, while BV Triumph will collide with Mile Rock in an East Coast versus Linden opening night.
Fans are in for a treat as more football action is set for the same venue tomorrow evening with another anticipated competitive double header.
Mahaica are down to challenge Soesdyke in the opening fixture at 6:00pm, while in the nightcap at 8:00pm, Golden Grove tackle Buxton Bakewell.
The teams are battling for the Mayor’s Cup and a first prize of $700,000, second $300,000, third $200,000 and fourth $100,000.
The Coordinator, who is a former National footballer and Coach and has been behind this event for all of its 22 years, had indicated that this year’s cup will form part of the 50th Anniversary Jubilee celebrations.
The games will be of 90 minute duration and if no result is derived after this period then 20 minutes of extra time will be contested. No further result or deadlock will be determined by penalty kicks.
Players involved in this tournament must be affiliated to their respective associations where the invited clubs are drawn. No entry fee is required. The tournament is governed under the rules and directives of the Guyana Football Federation. Players with double yellow cards or red cards will be penalized in accordance with the rules of the competition and the GFF.
