The Berbice Volleyball Association (BVA) in its continued drive to keep players active and spread the game and unearth new talent in the county recently successfully organised a one day volleyball extravaganza which was held at the Port Mourant Community Centre.
The BVA, which has also taken a strong anti suicide stance, saw the day’s activity being played under the theme “Live Up doesn’t give up with suicide.” The extravaganza took different formats with some 37 teams being put together and some 222 players participating.
The national and senior players were seeded and placed in the respective teams with the other players selected at random and allotted to the teams. In all eight courts were used with the games being one set of 15 points each. There were games in the male- seniors and juniors and female senior and juniors categories, mixed and some fun volleyball. There were some exhibition games played also.
Players were drawn from Orealla/Siparuta, Three Door Strikers, Port Mourant Training Centre 1, 2 and 3; Corriverton Jets, Black Birds, Black Bush Polder, Albion United, Port Mourant Jaguars, Tain Humanitarian, No 52 Survivors, Berbice High School, Skeldon Line Path Secondary. A number of the teams were represented by senior junior and female players.
No particular winners were announced, but some outstanding players, barring the national and more established players, were identified and rewarded for their performances.
In the senior male category those identified were- Jaidat Budhoo and Dwayson Watson and Utgudra Mutasammy of Black Bush Polder, and Jogh Lindy and Kelon Castello of BHS.
Among the junior boys, those recognised were Homchand Dhanpat of three Door Strikers, Dannel Joseph of BHS, Veral Felix and Cleon France and Sherman Felix of Oreall, Asif Baksh Of Corriverton Jets Shazam Mohammed of Black Bush Polder, Jermey Seelochan of Port Mourant and Andy Rohoman of No 52 Survivors.
Among the senior females were Rochel De Souza, Rhonda Felix, Stephanie Williams and Sheliza Edwards of Orealla / Siparuta and Anica Easton of Black Birds.
The outstanding players were all presented with trophies and other accolades compliments of Mr. Alex Foster of the St Francis Community Developers (SFCD) and the BVA. (Samuel Whyte)
