Basketball stakeholders met recently at New Thriving Restaurant for much-needed consultations on the Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) Under-16 Championships, which Guyana will host at the Cliff Anderson Sport
Hall early in July.
The Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF) organised the forum that featured members from its sub-associations in Linden, Georgetown and Berbice among public relations, media and marketing experts to muse on various aspects of the event.
The Caribbean U-16 Championships is a mega event, and is being treated as such. The GABF is leaving no stone unturned to ensure that every facet of the event is properly managed. President, Nigel Hinds will spearhead a soon to be named Local Organising Committee (LOC) that will be multi-dimensional to cover the scope of work to be done.
A consensus was reached on the Coach of Guyana’s team, but a panel of coaches will be named to prepare the team. In addition, the issue of putting Guyana’s best team on the floor occupied a large part of the discussions. Youth Basketball Guyana will specifically deal with that aspect of the Championships that returns here after 17 years.
The Government has committed to refurbishing the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, and $20 million as part of the prerequisite to host the regional competition. The other matters discussed included logistics, accommodation and marketing among other necessary elements.
Also present at the meeting was CBC Vice-President -Finance and Marketing, Guyanese, Patrick Haynes. The top three teams in the male and female categories qualify for the 2017 CentroBasket U-17 Championships.
