It’s here again, the annual Petra Organisation-organised Soft Shoe Football Competition which has its genesis in 2015.
Yesterday, at the Spice Garden Restaurant & Bar on Pike Street, Campbellville, the Petra Organisation, which has teamed up with the Ministry of Public Health under its Stop Gender-based Violence theme, launched its
annual project which had in attendance Co-Director Troy Mendonca, Guyana Football Federation (GFF) President Wayne Forde and Health Education Officer of the Ministry of Public Health Joy Gravesande.
Mendonca speaking at the occasion gave a synopsis of the tournament which he revealed will start on May 17 and run until June 18 at various grounds within the Georgetown community including West and East Ruimveldt and the ground directly opposite the Cuffy Monument.
He added that over $700,000 in total prize monies will be up for grabs with the winning team set to receive $300,000, runner-up $200,000, 3rd place $100,000 and 4th place $50,000 along with trophies.
Mendonca pointed out that the collaboration between the Ministry and Petra has been a fruitful one that started a few years ago and has maintained its strength through the vision they share.
Forde in his presentation commended the Organisation for teaming up with the Ministry to help highlight the scourge, which according to him, has become pervasive in the society.
The GFF President also applauded the Petra Organisation for having the foresight to persist in the further development of the sport despite the challenges that the current and previous administrations encountered, adding that their position has always been not to let administrative issues affect the sport’s forward thrust.
He reminded that the GFF will always be supportive of any organisation that is willing to assist in the development of the game, but challenged the Petra Organisation to reach out to other communities and not restrict their reach to just Georgetown.
Gravesande in her remarks told the gathering that while they’ve collaborated with the Organisation at the schools level the occasion marks the first time that they will be engaging in getting into the communities at the senior level.
“We see this as one of the solutions to tackling the problem and this is why we are going to target them,” Gravesande said.
She added that the tournament is good and useful for the men and we intend to conduct sessions with them about helping to stamp out Gender-based Violence.
Twenty-four community-based teams in Georgetown, which will be divided into six groups of four, will be involved in the tournament. The winner and the runner up automatically go through to the knockout phase along with the four best third placed teams.
There would be no entrance fee to the games.
Apart from the Public Health Ministry the other sponsors on board are: Busta, GTT, Lucky Dollar, Nigel’s Supermarket, Junior’s Jewelry, Star Party Rental and 2 J’s General Store.
