Regal defeated Superior Woods by one run to win the final of the Gandhi Youth Organisation softball tournament played on Sunday.
Regal managed 126-2 of their allotted 10 overs, taking first strike. Fazleem Mohamed
and Eric Thomas added 56 for the opening stand to give their team a solid start. Mohamed slammed two fours and seven sixes in a top score of 68 while Thomas got 19. Mahase Chunilall chipped in with 20. Superior Woods threatened but were restricted for 125-8 in reply. Peter Persaud smashed one four and eight sixes before he went for 60. Persaud would have already set for foundation for the chase, but Regal skipper Mahendra Hardyal marshaled his troops well to ensure his side came out on top. With nine needed off the final over, Ricky Persaud conceded eight to finish with 3-17. Raymond Harper took 2-13.
Regal had earlier beat Pune Warriors by 21 runs. Batting first, Regal posted 120-4. Harper scored 33 and Chunilall 31; Oslyn Batson had 2-14. Pune Warriors made 99-9 in reply. Danny Mohanram got 23 and R. Persaud 21. Javed Juman snared 3-5 and Mahendra Hardyal 2-30.
Superior Woods overcame Pune Warriors by five wickets. Pune Warriors made 132 all out in 14.4 overs, taking first knock. R. Persaud made 35, Navin Singh 24 and Mohanram 21. Darmindra Mohabir grabbed 4-30, Richard Latif 2-02 and Peter Persaud 2-34. Superiors Wolf responded with 133-5 in 12 overs. Rudy Rodrigues struck 84 while Dannie Mangroo made 22 and Talesh Ramotar 16. Devendra Narine took two wickets.
Surendra Hiralal of GYO congratulated regal and thanked the other participating teams. He stated that the club is working towards improving the facility and expressed gratitude to Mahendra Hardyal of Regal Sport for their input. (Zaheer Mohamed)
