Following emergency works on Sunday, the MV Canawaima, was ready to resume operations yesterday. The vessel, which plies the Guyana to Suriname route, was set to depart as scheduled at 11:00hrs.
“The Management of the Canawaima Ferry Service Incorporated wishes to thank the members of the general public, particularly those who might have been affected by the disruption, for their patience and cooperation.”
The ferry service is a key link between Guyana and Suriname, taking vehicles and goods between Guyana and Suriname.
The Transport and Harbours Department was incorporated in Guyana on October 28, 1998. It is one of two wholly owned subsidiaries of the Canawaima Management Company J.V which was incorporated in Suriname. The other subsidiary is the Scheepvaart Maatschappij Suriname NV (SMSNV).
Canawaima Management Company is itself a wholly owned subsidiary of Canawaima Ferry Services Inc. which was incorporated in Guyana.
Transport and Harbours Department Inc was incorporated to handle the ferry service and terminal facilities on the Guyana side while SMS NV did likewise on the Suriname side.
The operations commenced on November 6, 1998 but, despite the initial hurdles and difficulties, the service continued to grow and advance over the years.
