Queen’s College (QC) defeated Marian Academy 5-15, 16-14, 15-12 to win the final of the Demerara Volleyball Association (DVA) organised Schools Championship which ended yesterday, at the National Gymnasium.
Played before a fair-sized crowd, QC first disposed of pre-tournament favourites St. Rose’s 15-13, 8-15, 15-9 in their semi-final matchup, while Marian Academy scrapedpast Linden Foundation 17-15, 16-14 to set up the pulsating final.
In attendance were President of the Guyana Volleyball Federation John Flores and President of the DVA Trevor Williams, who both delivered key addresses following the conclusion of the final.
Flores in his remarks said he was pleased with the standard of play exhibited by the young players, but cautioned that the upcoming engagement against a Berbice Select team will be even more competitive and urged the players to continue to train hard since Berbice has a vibrant volleyball following and the game is amongst the paramount sports played in the region.
Williams in his presentation thanked all the teams that participated in the tournament and urged the players to continue to stay involved in the sport.
He said that it is his wish that volleyball stay in the schools and get bigger and better.
The DVA Head thanked the parents who he recognised as main pillar of encouragement to the students and asked that they maintain their suport to them in their aspirations to develop their individual skills.
He paid recognition to all the schools that participated in the tournament and showered praise on the teachers for their efforts in helping to prepare the teams.
Meanwhile, the DVA has shortlisted a squad to prepare for the Under-19 and 23 South American competitions which are scheduled to be played in Colombia in June.
