A Surinamese national who tried to slip into the country illegally and bring with him a quantity of drugs, was caught and subsequently jailed.
The man, Poypic Mian, 30, of Nickerie, Suriname, who tried to enter the country without the necessary documents on April 10, last, was nabbed by police at the No. 78 backtrack crossing.
He was searched and eight grams of marijuana was found concealed in a plastic bag he had in his possession.
He subsequently appeared at the Springlands Magistrates’ Court before Magistrate Rabindranauth Singh on the charges of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking and illegal entry.
He was sentenced to three years in jail on the narcotic charge and fined $20,000 or three weeks in jail on the illegal entry charge.
