Residents of Mocha and Diamond, East Bank Demerara will soon benefit from street lights in keeping with Government’s pledge to create safe comfortable communities for citizen’s long-term wellbeing.
Ministry of Public Infrastructure’s Work Services Group (WSG), Coordinator, Geoffrey Vaughn, told the Government Information Agency (GINA) that, ”our two main areas of focus at present are Mocha road and Diamond.”
He said that contracts were also awarded for lighting in Phillippi, Corentyne, Region Six.
Some parts of Sophia and the Soesdyke/Linden Highway already have street lights as well as some areas in Georgetown that were previously unlit, Vaughn said.
Additionally, Vaughn explained that an inventory was carried out in other areas without street lights, and Church and Waterloo Streets and other dark areas will be lit in time for the 50th Independence celebrations.
Over the years, there has been outcry from citizens for improved and new infrastructure in their communities and for street and traffic lights.
The government has budgeted significant sums which have been approved by the National Assembly for the installation of street and traffic lights across the country.
A total of $14.4 billion has been budgeted to the Ministry of Public Infrastructure for the upgrade, expansion and rehabilitation of roads and bridges out of which $72M is for lighting the Linden and Corentyne Highways, and the Coverden and Ogle roadways.
