The man at the other end of the line made promises of a big payoff: $500,000 in cash, a new car and two new cell phones. But first “GT&T” needed $20,000, in credit, he insisted, then the jackpot would be all hers as a result of an ongoing promotion. Kaieteur News understands she presented her entire paycheck.
A woman from Diamond, East Bank Demerara is claiming that she was contacted by an individual who called her cell phone to inform her that that she won the prizes in an ongoing promotion where GTT is rewarding the longest serving customers.
The woman who asked to remain anonymous said that she got the call in the afternoon from a GTT number. “He call me and tell me where I does live; he know me whole name and certain things about me,” the distraught woman said.
She said that she had just drawn her paycheck; she had not paid any of her bills yet.
Despite several warnings posted on Facebook, television and via text messages addressed by GTT and Digicel, more is the pity for persons who have previously been defrauded for much more money.
Recently in a Kaieteur News report just a few weeks ago, a woman was ripped off after a caller promised her $42,000 if she’d spend $21,000 worth in phone cards. The perpetrators were never apprehended and apparently they are becoming very successful and craftier.
The woman said that while she was on the phone with the man who called himself Anthony Singh, her battery suddenly died and the call was cut off. He called her landline number and that certainly convinced the woman that she could follow through with the transaction since she never gave him the number to begin with.
“I was sure he was from GTT then cause is only them does get certain information about you, he knew my cell and my landline.” She said when she completed the transaction she called the number but it disengaged. Several minutes flew by, the woman said, and she became disheartened.
Her worst fears were confirmed when she called GTT. She was then told to report the matter to the police who would handle the investigation.
Public Relations Officer of GTT, Nadia De Abreu, told Kaieteur News that persons take a risk when they are misinformed by the schemers. She said, the company issues text messages often, and warnings via television and radio broadcasts to discourage persons from falling into the trap.
“The most we can do right now is deactivate the number that has called her.”
But this only brought more disappointment to the woman, who cried out for her money back.
“There’s no way that the police can investigate if they disable the number, since GTT can provide the name of the person who registered for the SIM card that called me,” she declared.
“This thing has to be something from within the administration.” The PRO strongly denies this.
