A 53-year old watchman was hacked to death on Wednesday night, when he confronted two men who had entered the compound he was guarding.
Abdul Sattaur Kadir, of 380 Ninth Street, Foulis, East Coast Demerara (ECD), died while receiving treatment at the Georgetown Public Hospital, less than an hour after he was picked up from his workplace, Best Buy Hardware Store at Bladen Hall, ECD.
Police said that about 22:45 hours on Wednesday, the security guard was alone on duty when he challenged two men who had entered the large compound from the back.
During this time, he was attacked by the men who dealt him several chops about his body with cutlasses and escaped.
According to reports, persons heard Kadir’s screams but by the time help arrived, his attackers had already fled.
Divisional Commander Marlon Chapman told Kaieteur News that the police received a call about the incident and responded, only to find Kadir lying in a pool of blood next to his guard hut. He had been chopped to the head, face, hands, and about his torso.
The Commander said that his ranks picked up the wounded man and took him to the hospital where he succumbed.
This newspaper was told that after chopping the watchman, the killers made no attempt to break into the hardware store, nor did they take anything from the compound.
“There was no sign of any attempt to enter the building and the owner said that nothing was stolen from the yard, although there are many pieces of equipment of immense value,” a police official on the East Coast of Demerara told this newspaper.
It is believed that the killers are familiar with the building and compound, since they took time to turn off the lights via a switch located at the back of the building.
At the dead man’s home in Foulis, his wife Maureen cried continuously as she tried to drown her grief. In between the tears she told this newspaper that her husband left home on Wednesday afternoon for work at the usual time, 17:00 hours.
The woman said that just before midnight, her son woke her up to answer the telephone.
Still groggy, she answered the phone and the news she got knocked the sleep completely from her eyes.
“They tell me meh husband get chop and gone to the hospital.” Maureen said.
She immediately dressed and rushed to the hardware store her husband was supposed to be guarding. There she met a crowd including several police ranks.
According to the victim’s wife, a policeman told her that her husband was already dead.
“Still me nah believe dem and me head to de hospital, me and me two children and me neighbour.”
When she got to the hospital, her husband’s body was already wrapped in plastic and porters were preparing to take it to the mortuary.
“Me ain’t get to see he,” the dead man’s wife cried.
She said that she was not told all the circumstances surrounding her husband’s death, but she is depending on the police to quickly apprehend his killers.
