Overnight and heavy mid-day rain ruined any chance Berbice had of upsetting leaders and defending champions Demerara in the second round of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) under-19 Inter-County 50-overs cricket
competition at the Wales Community Centre yesterday.
The two points for the washed out game pushed Demerara closer to a successful title defence as they moved to 11.3 points and are almost assured of a place in Sunday’s final after beating Essequibo in the first round at Everest.
Berbice, beaten by the U-17s at Enterprise, collected their first two points of the competition from yesterday’s rain-ruined game which was called at 14:30hrs.
The rain stopped briefly just after Lunch before a heavy downpour shortly after left the already soggy ground with a few puddles of water inside the 30-yard on the western section of the venue although the pitch remained dry.
Up to then prospects of playing a 20-over contest, the minimum number of overs to constitute a game, looked promising and even though the sun came out in all of its glory, the removal of the covers would have taken longer than the cut off time of 14:30hrs.
Tomorrow the U-17s clash with Demerara at DCC, while Berbice, who have endured one of their worst seasons of U-19 Inter-County cricket, battles Essequibo at Bourda from 09:30hrs.
The top two teams on the points table will vie for championship honours on Sunday at Bourda. (Sean Devers)
