The Demerara Distillers Limited under its Pepsi and Gatorade brands has thrown its support behind the Guyana Boxing Association for the hosting of its inaugural international school boys and juniors tournament which is set to commence tomorrow night at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
Larry Wills of DDL yesterday presented a cheque to president of the GBA Steve Ninvalle at the launching of the event which took place at Laluni Street, Queenstown.
Ninvalle said they have confirmed St. Lucia and Jamaica’s participation but are waiting on a feedback from Barbados.
He added that such a tournament is vital for the growth of the sport not only in Guyana but the Caribbean, stating that it will be an annual affair. “We have noted across the Caribbean that very little being placed on boxing in schools so we have gone as far for the sport to be included in schools. It’s my belief that boxing is one of the sports where you have to be most disciplined,” he added. The GBA boss thanked DDL and indicated that Guyana will participate in a Creole competition slated for June in Cayenne.
Wills indicated that they are happy to be associated with the tournament and is looking forward to a successful one. He pledged their continued support, adding that such events will provide local boxers with the opportunity to match skills with their overseas counterparts. He lauded the GBA on the venture.
Coach Seibert Blake expressed gratitude to the parents of the local boxers and thanked the GBA for their efforts in promoting the sport. He stated that this is very vital for the development of the young pugilists and also expressed confidence of the local athletes for the event. Blake informed that the Guyanese team was selected based on their performance in a recent camp and that local boxers will also compete among themselves.
Coach Terrence Poole spoke of the importance of the tournament, adding that it will help to take the sport to another level in the Caribbean.
Action gets underway from 6:00pm tomorrow and Saturday evening at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall and admission to the venue is $500 for any over 12 years, while children under 12 will be admitted free.
