Pele recorded back to back wins when their main weapon once again displayed ominous form to lead them past the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) 3-1 in the main attraction on Sunday night when the STAG Elite League
Finale continued.
It was the second loss in as many matches for the Army side. The first match saw the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) losing their 10th of 11 matches when they went down to Buxton United 2-0 on account of a double from the dependable Denvor Dennis.
GFC was reduced to 10 players in the 39th minute when their Captain Linden Pickett was sent off for violent conduct.
Pele, coming off a 1-0 win over Buxton compliments of Richardson’s goal, ensured that this was going to be another good night for them in their quest to restore their journey to some semblance of order after faltering in the opening rounds of the FINALE.
Richardson hit the back of the nets in the 20th minute to send Pele on their way. The GDF have only themselves to blame as they lacked the killer instinct upfront having created chances which they could not make count.
The Army was robbed a clear penalty opportunity when one of their players was clearly pulled down in the area but it was obvious that the infringement was not clear to the standing Referee nor his assistant.
On the opposite end, Richardson is one of the players who given a half chance will make good of it. His nagging kind of play was too much for the soldiers to contain as he doubled his tally and his team’s in the 40th minute for a 2-0 advantage.
Pele stretched their advantage in the 58th minute through an Omallo Williams goal as they sat comfortably ahead. The Army saved some face when they netted one of their own in the 79th minute through Selwyn Isaacs.
The win was Pele’s fifth in 11 matches with an equal amount of losses and a single draw; they have jumped ahead of the GDF and are now on 16 points, two more than the GDF which suffered loss number 5, having racked up 4 wins with 2 draws.
The first match on the night saw Buxton sealing three valuable points by the end of the first half as Denvor Dennis took center stage; he rocked the nets in the 30th and 40th minute to help secure just the second win for his side in 11 matches as they moved to 8 points.
THE young GFC side did not do their cause any good when their Captain and dependable defender Linden Pickett was sent packing in the first half. Despite the setback, the Bourda based boys put up stern resistance but could not convert as they continue to languish at the bottom of the points table, yet to win a match, their only point coming from a draw.
Points leaders, Slingerz FC (30) will again be in action today as they canter towards victory in the FINALE and is the only unbeaten team so far. The West Demerara side will take on former National champions Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United in what is anticipated to be a keen contest.
The curtain raiser at 18:30hrs will serve up more excitement when Fruta Conquerors (25-points), the second placed team will seek another three points when they match skills with West Berbice’ Monedderlust, holding down the penultimate position in the standings with six points.
