An incisive spell from Kevin Sinclair and a century opening stand between Sachin Singh and the in-form Bhaskar Yadram spearheaded the National U-17s to an emphatic eight-wicket win over Berbice in the opening round of
the GCB’s Hand-in-Hand 50-over U-19 Inter-County yesterday at the Enterprise ground.
Berbice demonstrated little intestinal fortitude as they crumbled for 126 in 31.1 overs despite a 76-ball 56 from Adrian Sukwah who shared in a 59-run fifth wicket partnership with Joel Seetram (37) and 40 for the third with Matthew Hardial (4).
Man-of-the-Match Sinclair befuddled the hapless Berbicians with 4-8 from 4.3 overs of off-spin on a flat track and received support from left-arm Ashmead Nedd (2-30).
The U-17s hit off the required runs in 22.5 overs to end on 127-2 with Yadram and Singh putting together 108 for the first wicket after seeing their team to Lunch at 90 without loss.
The 16-year-old Yadram followed up his 177 at Wales on the final day of the three-day version on Saturday with another delightful innings in which the right-hander played confident on his home ground to strengthen his chances of making both the National U-17 and U-19 teams this year.
Yadram finished unbeaten on 50 decorated with six fours and batted with authority and conviction in his maiden 50-over half-century.
Singh was not left out of party, thumping two sixes and two fours in a 61-ball 43 before he was removed by Seetaram at 108-1 just after the interval of a contest in which both sides were guilty
off sloppy fielding.
Essequibian Reon Venture looked at sea at this level and was removed by Deion St Clair for a duck without addition to the score before Joshua Persaud (14) and Yadram ensured the one-sided match was over by 14:22hrs in sweltering heat.
Earlier, Berbice lost their first wicket when Sasenarine Sukhu (1) was bowled by Alphius Bookie at 6-1. The multi talented Joshua Jones, who represented Guyana in the last Junior Carifta games, sent back Alex Algoo (2) at the same score.
Matthew Hardial (4) was the silent partner in a 40-run stand with Sukwah who was not afraid to play his shots before Hardial fell at 46-1 and Rameer Ishan was removed by Sagar Hatheramani one run later.
Seetaram and Sukwah revived the position but after Seetaram was trapped LBW to give Sinclair his first wicket at 106-5 no one else offered any resistance as six wickets tumbled for 20 runs for Berbice, one of the weakest teams from the ancient County in the history of U-19 Inter-County Cricket in Guyana.
The competition continues with two matches tomorrow.
