President David Granger, on Friday last met with the Secretary General of the Commonwealth, Baroness Patricia Scotland. The meeting took place at the United Nations Headquarters where both the President and the Commonwealth Secretary General were attending the signing ceremony of the historic Paris Agreement.
President Granger took the opportunity to once again congratulate the Baroness on her appointment as the new Secretary General of the Commonwealth of Nations. The President wished the Secretary General a successful tenure.
During the meeting with Baroness Scotland, the President spoke of the significance of her appointment, coming as she did from a small island developing state, since the Commonwealth itself is made up of mainly small states. He noted, also, the coincidence of their meeting on the margins of the signing of the Paris Agreement, which is a global response to climate change, a phenomenon that is of great concern to all countries of the world, but particularly to Small-Island Developing States (SIDS). SIDS are particularly prone to the threat of rising sea levels caused by climate change.
Mr. Deodat Maharaj, Deputy Secretary General of the Commonwealth and Mr. Ram Venuprasad, Deputy Head of the Office of the Secretary General accompanied the Baroness to the meeting.
Meanwhile, President Granger held talks with Italian Prime Minister, Matteo Renzi, also on Friday at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. The meeting between the two leaders took place on the margins of the Signing Ceremony of the Paris Agreement.
The President of Guyana shared with the Italian Prime Minister his government’s plans to promote a Green Economy. The President also took the opportunity to raise the possibility of Italian support for the Iwokrama Centre for International Rainforest Conservation and Development.
The Centre was established as a partnership between Guyana and the Commonwealth Secretariat to manage the Iwokrama forest, a unique reserve of 371,000 hectares of rainforest located in Guyana, “in a manner that will lead to lasting ecological, economic and social benefits to the people of Guyana and to the world in general”.
