The Guyana Squash Association (GSA) in collaboration with its corporate sponsor Digicel held its third tournament for 2016, the Ansa Mc Al Lucozade Handicap Squash Tournament at the Georgetown Club Inc courts.
The curtains came down on the tournament on Saturday evening with two pulsating finals and a night filled with breathtaking squash. Ashley Khalil became the new Open champion with a dramatic come from behind victory over Adam Alves, while Kamir Khan is the new category A champion after his defeat of Mohyryan Baksh.
In the Open final Khalil -3 started eleven points behind Alves +8. Alves dominated the first game with some exquisite shots and secured victory 15/9. In the second game Khalil came out more focused, started moving Alves around the court and making less mistakes. She quickly erased the eleven point difference and caught Alves at ten and won the second game 15/10. At one all it was anyone’s final to win. The last game Alves got to eleven points before Khalil came out of negative and got to zero. Alves led 13/6, then 14/10 match ball but Khalil would not give up, held her nerve and won the next five points to secure victory 15/14 and win her first handicap title.
In the category A final 10 year old Khan was up against nine year old Baksh. Both players had a handicap of +10 so the match started at 0/0. Khan quickly raced out to a 7/2 lead and eventually won the first game 15/8. In the second game it was Baksh who led from the start and moved out to 9/4. At ten all it seemed as if Khan would have a straight set victory but Baksh won the next three points before Khan would win two. Baksh then won the next two points to close out the second game 15/12. Khan seemed inspired in the third game and was quickly out to a 12/3 lead and then was at 14/8 match ball but Baksh would not go down easily and got the twelve before Khan closed out the game and match 15/12.
In the Open category third place playoff between the De Groot brothers, younger brother Raphael -12 beat Peter Michael -10 by two games to one. Raphael won the first game 15/11 but Peter Michael won a tense second game 15/14. Raphael however was not to be denied and easily won the third game 15/5.
In the Category A third place match James Mekdeci +8 beat Mashal Allicock +12 in straight games. James won 15/12, 15/14.
Javid Rahaman -1 defeated Alec Melville 0 by two games to one to win the Open category plate final. Javid lost the first 8/15 but bounced back to win the next two games 15/13, 15/12. Ashley De Groot +3 beat Theron Mohabeer +7 by two games to one for place third. Ashley won the first game 15/14 but dropped the second game 11/15. However, she easily won the third game 15/9.
In the Category A plate final Madison Fernandes +5 defeated Mikhail Persaud +12 in straight games 15/11, 15/11. In the third place match Abosaide Cadogan +5 beat Demetrius De Abreu 0 15/9, 15/1.
