Dear Editor,
It really is so easy. All the Government has to do is BAN THOSE ANNOYING BLACK PLASTIC BAGS that every retailer thinks they have to give a customer, or else the customer will ‘buse them’.
The BLACK PLASTIC BAGS are choking our community, our environment our country and the EARTH. We have tons of them at home so we can recycle, really we can, we don’t need one for tomatoes, one for cucumber, one for one pear, one for a packet of rice etc. What did we do before this absurd culture came along?
Doesn’t anyone ever wonder where the bags go once you throw them away? I am sure if you took a look at the dump site as it exist in Hagues Bosch you might understand that we are killing ourselves with a foolish custom of giving those ANNOYING ‘BLACK’ PLASTIC BAGS to every customer for every purchase. Why can’t we bring our own bags to do our shopping? Why? Shopping Bags nowadays are so versatile you simply fold them up and keep them in a regular bag that you carry around, and then you can take it out to use when you need to.
It is in the Governments hands BAN THEM, let people take responsibility for their own bags while shopping. In England they now charge for the plastic bag and what a big difference it has made: and England is a country that DOES HAVE (as far as I am aware)a PROPER GARBAGE DISPOSAL SYSTEM unlike Guyana.
Whoever reads this letter let your conscience be your guide, if you really care about Guyana, don’t keep taking THOSE ANNOYING PLASTIC BAGS, use your own or recycle the ones you have at home. By the way I am well aware that the same plastic bags used to be stripped pink and white or blue and white, they simply changed the colour but not the quality. Long ago you could buy a good quality black plastic bag for 20 dollars.
Look, the custom has become so ingrained that, when I refuse to take one, the retailer literally wants to force one on me, telling me how my groceries will get mash up, or I need to double a bag for strength. I said ‘Fine, let them get mash, I don’t mind’. Then another retailer telling me, ‘No, here what you do..you take it home, and you use it for garbage, that is what I do’. Thanks but, no thanks, I’ve done that too but I still have far more than I will ever need and the plastic is still clogging up the dumpsite rapidly with no end to this dilemma in sight
If supermarkets offered some type of discount for customers who brought along their own bags, people would rise to the occasion. But no, supermarkets encourage the lawlessness by packing toiletries in a different plastic bag from groceries etc. as if that is necessary.
I close by stating that every retailer should ask the customer before they serve, ‘Have you brought a bag?’ If they haven’t and the retailer says, ’Okay, you want one for 20 dollars?’ EVERY TIME, you’ll soon see how quick people’s minds set will change and they will start bringing their own bags or recycling. Hey this is my theory and I’m sticking to it BAN THOSE ANNOYING BLACK PLASTIC BAGS…SAVE OUR BEAUTIFUL GUYANA.
