No play was possible on the opening day of the third and final round game of the Guyana Cricket Board/Hand-in-Hand Inter County U19 three-day tournament between Essequibo and Demerara yesterday at Bourda.
Heavy rainfall and not having enough covers caused seepages leaving a large section of the square soggy, and despite the efforts of the ground staff the umpires were forced to call-off play after lunch.
Essequibo needs an outright victory to win the tournament since they are in second spot on 16.8 points; Demerara are atop on 20. The Select Under-17 team is on 6.3 ahead of Berbice on 4.1.
Essequibo skipper Keemo Paul said his boys are disappointed but they are hoping that the conditions improve to facilitate an early start today since they are in a must win situation. “We really need to win this game, but we have no control over the rain, the players are hoping to get some play in the second and third days,” he stated.
Home team captain Travis Persaud explained that although his side is leading the points table, his players are looking forward to match skills with the Essequibians. Play is set to start at 09:30hrs today.
