Thirty-two year-old Gariban Ali, called ‘Bagie’, who was wanted for a murder and wounding was arrested over the weekend at Haslington, East Coast Demerara.
Gariban and his brother, Mohamed Ali, called ‘John’, 34, were wanted for the murder of 46-year-old Patrick Boodie, called ‘Budie’, or ‘Bossman’ of 189, Levi Dam, Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam. They were also wanted for wounding Boodie’s brother, Calvin Charles, 44, a porkknocker of 195 Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam, and a cousin, Jason Nicholson, 28, a mason and taxi driver of High Dam.
The brawl took place on Wednesday April 15, 2015, at Levi Dam, New Amsterdam, Berbice.
Ali who was identified as the shooter was recently released from jail after serving three years on a drug-running charge.
The injured Charles had given the media a detailed account of what had transpired. He had stated that there was no dispute. He along with Boodie and five others were assisting his nephews and nieces build a house on a plot of land at High Dam since they had to remove from where they were living.
They had started clearing and had lit a fire on some dry grass in the yard. The fire eventually spread to an empty plot of land next door and reportedly burnt some materials, including a large quantity of drugs on the empty plot which reportedly belongs to the Alis. Gariban Ali reportedly became furious.
Charles went to investigate the damage caused when he was chucked by Mohamed Ali and a scuffle ensued.
Gariban Ali allegedly came from behind and dealt Charles a lash to his head. It is also alleged that Mohamed Ali then stabbed him with a knife on his left hand. He was able to escape and to inform his brother what was going on.
Boodie went to the scene to investigate and it is alleged that he was dealt a chop by Mohamed Ali. He fell into a drain. Gariban Ali, who was armed with a pistol, then allegedly began shooting at the wounded Boodie, who was struck several times, and continued shooting until the pistol was empty.
A post mortem examination conducted on the body of Boodie concluded that he died from shock and hemorrhage due to gunshot injuries. Seven bullet holes and three chop wounds were found on the body.
The next day two houses belonging to the alleged perpetrators were set on fire, minutes apart.
At the time of his arrest, Gariban Ali reportedly had 7.7kg of cannabis in his possession. He is in custody and is being grilled in connection with the two offences. He is expected to be charged with murder, as well as possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.
