Coordinator Lennox Arthur has disclosed that several changes have been made to this year’s Mayor’s Cup
Football tournament due to some challenges with obtaining the full sponsorship to stage the event.
Arthur informed that the lack of sponsorship has forced him and the organising committee to reduce the number of teams participating to 20 from the planned 32, while the prize money has also been reduced. The prizes will now be $700,000, $300,000, $200,000 and $100,000 for the top four finishers. The prizes were reduced from $1,000,000, $500,000, $300,000 and $200,000 respectively for the first to fourth place finishers.
The Coordinator, who is a former National footballer and Coach and has been behind this event for all of its 22 years, had indicated that this year’s cup will form part of the 50th Anniversary Jubilee celebrations.
The action kicks off on Sunday May 1 at the Victoria Ground on the East Coast of Demerara with Mahaica of the East Coast facing Eagles United of Linden and home side Victoria Kings playing Milerock, another Linden team.
Play continues Monday May 2 at the same venue with Golden Grove versus Federal Winners Connection and Ann’s Grove against Grove Hi Tech of the East Bank. Action moves to the Den Amstel ground on the West of Demerara on Thursday May 5 with Police vs Winner of Match #1 and Den Amstel vs Winner of Match #2.
The tournament concludes on May 29.
Arthur is still hopeful of sponsorship and is encouraging potential sponsors to come on board. Interested persons or Companies can contact the Coordinator on telephone 626-9351.
The games will be of 90 minute duration and if no result is derived after this period then 20 minutes of extra time will be contested. No further result of deadlock will be determined by penalty kicks.
Players involved in this tournament must be affiliated to their respective associations where the invited clubs are drawn. No entry fee is required. The tournament is governed under the rules and directives of the Guyana Football Federation. Players with double yellow cards or red cards will be penalized in accordance with the rules of the competition and the GFF.
