East Berbice Corentyne, has joined a number of other regions in launching its activities to celebrate Guyana’s 50th Independence Anniversary.
The launch which was held at State House, New Amsterdam on Friday, featured a mix of musical and dance performances with national songs ushering in the activities.
Speaking briefly at the event, following the rendition of ‘Let us cooperate’ and ‘My Guyana, El Dorado’ performed by the Council of Friends of New Amsterdam (COFONA) Drum Corporation, Regional Chairman, David Armogan, welcomed all those present, especially visitors to the region. He made a call for all to “join hands” in showing the rest of the world that “we are unified to charter our way for the next fifty years.”
He is happy that the Region has launched its activities and assured that the region was fully onboard with the rest of the country to join in national celebrations. “We have a full range of activities to unleash ourselves.”
Regional Executive Officer, Dr. Veerasammy Ramayya, encouraged citizens to be ready for the celebrations but “specifically Guyana’s Independence Day celebrations on May 26.
Fitting with the 50th Golden Jubilee theme: Reflection, Celebration and Inspiration, cultural dances ‘Greater things are yet to come’ and ‘Promises’ performed by Anbal Praise Dance Ministry, expressed the region’s expectations and willingness to cooperate for Guyana’s 50th Golden Jubilee.
Meanwhile, Minister of Education, within the Department of Culture, Youth and Sport, Nicolette Henry, the guest speaker at the launch, reflected on her upbringing in the region. She told her fellow Berbicians, “We will make great progress, build a home [for ourselves and the upcoming generation], where we can celebrate [Guyana’s] Golden Jubilee.”
The launch concluded with the releasing of 50 balloons with colours of the Guyana flag signifying Guyana’s Golden Jubilee celebrations by the junior Anbal Praise Dance Ministry and national songs performed by the COFONA Drum Cooperation.
Other officials who attended the launch included Minister within the Ministry of Social Protection, Keith Scot and Deputy Regional Executive Officer, Claude Henry.
The activity was chaired by designer/promoter Maxine Williams.
