Guyana’s junior table tennis boys’ team qualified for the first Pan American Junior
and Cadet Championships scheduled for the June 25-30 in Vancouver, Canada after its gold medal doubles performance at the Caribbean Championships on Friday.
The 18 years and under junior boys’ doubles pair, Kyle Edghill and Elishaba Johnson secured gold at the Caribbean Junior and Cadet Table Tennis Championships in the Dominican Republic.
The pair stormed to the title after overcoming, Trinidad and Tobago’s Aaron Wilson and Joshua Maxwell 3-1 in the finals.
In the semifinals round, they defeated the number one ranked duo, Dominican Republic’s Carlos Guzman and Pedro Balbuena 3-0 in a thrilling high intensity game. Guyana’s other contestants in the U-18 doubles competition, Shemar Britton and Miguel Wong lost 1-3 in the second round to Wilson and Maxwell.
The team has now added gold to its silver medal secured in the team events, which concluded on Friday. The performances guarantee Guyana’s team qualification into the Pan American Junior Championships in Canada.
The Singles competition of the Caribbean Junior Championships began yesterday.
